Suck it up, Buttercup! Virtual 5K

Suck It Up, Buttercup! Virtual 5K

My first virtual 5K.  Which I did on the last possible day.  Because I am a procrastinator.  BAD.

So I went to the school gym, because it is all cold and icy still in lovely Syracuse.  Well, it definitely was not cold in there.  In fact, I walked in and started sweating, it was so hot.  Got on the treadmill, started my warm-up and started sweating even more.  No fans, no air moving, just me and a bunch of sorority girls (on the elliptical, of course), sweating to the beat of my warming up footsteps.

Then I got off the treadmill and left.  Major fail.  I went less than a half mile.  However, I WAS going to do my 5K, I just needed to figure out how.  After much deliberation, I went home, popped in Leslie Sansone’s 3 mile walk and did that.  So I got in just over 5K, in approximately 50 minutes.

I am not going to count it for one of the 12 races I want to do this year, as I did most of it walking in place in my living room, but I am glad that I know I can go that distance and that I did not quit, which would have been so easy to do.  In the future, I am going to try to beat my procrastinating nature and do these at the beginning of the month/week/whatever, so that if I have a problem, I will have time to fix it…

3 Things Thursday

“E” is for exercise…
  1. Bronchitis sucks (Sorry for the language).  One week later and I still have coughing fits and breathing problems in the cold.  Luckily, I can exercise again!  Not too hard, but I’ll take what I can get.
  2. Orange is my favorite color, so I really liked the book photograph above.  Even my car is bright orange:-)
  3. I have been reading The New Rules of Lifting for Women.  I LOVE it and need to find a gym at school with real weights so that I can start the program ASAP!

The Good, The Bad and The Mucus-y

What a weekend…

The Good

Saturday was my husband’s birthday!  On Friday we went to an art museum and to the symphony and Saturday had dinner with some friends (we also had desert at this awesome new wine and desert bar called Bittersweet).  I had Friday and Saturday off and then ended up having Sunday (and, it appears, today) off due to a water main break.

The Bad

Last week started out as the most mentally exhausting of my adult life and this weekend was physically draining.  I woke up Friday feeling achy, with an awful hacking cough.  This just got worse on Saturday, when I slept through tea with my husband and his parents at my favorite tea house, not getting out of bed until 5pm.

I was hoping to be better by the 5K on Sunday.  I woke up to this:

Cazenovia weather

That’s right: -10 with wind chill.  Combined with the fact that I couldn’t breath easily (when we got home Saturday night, it was so cold and my nose so stuffed up I nearly had a panic attach because I couldn’t breath just walking up the driveway to the apartment), this cold temperature, and the fact I would have been outside for about 45 minutes to an hour (I’m sloooow) meant no first 5K:-(  I read quite a bit on cold weather running, which basically said use the treadmill below 0 or, if you must go outside, wear a lot of clothing that I do not own.  Thank you all so much for your positive comments on my earlier post!  I can’t even begin to tell you how much they meant to me!!!

The Mucus-y

Mucus Man

Time for Mr. Mucus to move along…  Especially since I have my internship and class tomorrow.

Future Plans

Since I was all psyched for my 5K, I am going to do:

Virtual 5K

Slated for Wednesday this week on the treadmill.  Also the First Annual Super Couch Potato 5K on Super Bowl Sunday.

I Registered for My 1st Race!

Chilly Chili 5K

I registered for my first ever race, the Chilly Chili 5K Run/Walk on Saturday!  My overall goal is to not come in last, but even if I do, I will finish.  I am so excited and hope this is just the start of many races this year (12 to be exact for the challenge I am in).

Crunchy Snow

It has been cold here in Syracuse the past few days.  The snow has a distinct crunchy sound when you walk over it that only happens when it gets bitterly cold out.  As such, I try to stay inside as much as possible… I hate being cold.

Went to Target today to buy a resistance band and, of course, came out with much more.  My fun finds:

Leslie Sansone DVD

Leslie Sansone 3 Mile walking DVD, which came with a free year of Fitness Magazine.

Jillian Michaels Kit

Jillian Michaels Total-Body Kit, which has resistance bands, a jump rope, exercise DVD and a nice mesh bad to hold everything.

I am looking forward to trying out the new DVDs later tonight.

I started reading Ultramarathon Man by Dean Karnazes.  It is amazing what a person can do if they put their mind to it.  Running is much more of a mental sport than I had realized in the past.

Off to enjoy dinner with the husband, then reading and exercising.  Have an amazing weekend!

3 Things Thursday

popcorn kernels(Source)

  1. Air-popped popcorn is my snack of choice.  Put a little Parmesan cheese and Frank’s Red Hot on it and it is delicious and healthy.
  2. This is my last free weekend for the next few months.  Classes start again on Tuesday.  I am taking 3 grad classes and a 2-credit internship.
  3. I lost 2.4 pounds this past week!  Upped the exercise and food tracking… and it worked:-)

Yoga

Yoga Girl(Source)

Last week I wrote about my trying yoga for stress relief.  I tried the Yoga for Dummies DVD, but couldn’t get into it.  I think it was just too slow and meditative.  Then I learned that Yoga Journal is doing a free 21-day yoga challenge.  It began yesterday, but you can still join in the fun.

Yesterdays video proved I have no balance and need to improve my flexibility.  I only fell over a couple times, though, so I will consider it a win.  Today I did better.  Someday I hope to be able to put my feet all the way down in downward dog pose.  I really like that these yoga sequences move so fast.  I feel I am getting a cardio workout as well as working on strength and flexibility (and balance).

Do you do yoga?  What made you start?  Any tips for us newbies?
